The fourth grade social studies curriculum encompasses the study of the United States and New Jersey. The Nation is divided into nine regions for instruction, with preliminary activities re-introducing map skills, and the environment. The role of the United States in world affairs also is included in the work undertaken for three marking periods during the academic year. The Garden State Unit of Study emphasizes New Jersey yesterday and today. Points emphasized include the development of our state from the colonial period to present, the original inhabitants of New Jersey, the Lenni Lenape Indians, state government, our urban regions and the role of our state in the Federal Union.
