2nd Grade Curriculum / 3rd Grade Curriculum / 4th Grade Curriculum Cedar Mountain Primary School is one of three primary schools in the Vernon Township Public School District. It houses grades 2-4 as well as special education classes. Programs have been developed which address the specific educational needs of our diverse student population. Since the foundation of all future learning is established at the primary level, the curriculum emphasizes the acquisition of basic skills through an integrated language arts approach in conjunction with related enrichment activities. The purpose of this approach is to encourage children to recognize the meaningful relationship between the acquisition of knowledge and how it is applied to daily life experiences. During the primary school years, children are expected to develop necessary life skills such as accepting responsibility, working as a team member, practicing healthy living habits and acquiring a respect for oneself and others. Our fundamental goal is to motivate, inspire and enlighten children who are beginning their educational journey. During the school year, Cedar Mountain Primary School affords children a balanced curriculum in Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Spelling), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Health. Library, Vocal Music, Art and Physical Education round out the regular curriculum offerings. Special programs include a Resource Center Program (both in-class support and pull-out replacement models) a Speech Language Program, an English as a Second Language Program, a Basic Skills Language Arts and Math Program (both in-class and pull-out models) a Computer Instruction Program, a Guidance Program, a Walk-Run Activity Program, a School-Wide Enrichment Program, a School Chorus, an Instrumental Music Program, an award-winning Violin Program (New Jersey State Department of Education Best Practices Award 1995/96), and a Family Tech Nights for students and parents. Students also participate in the local police department's D.A.R.E. Program, as a component of the Health curriculum. In addition, every school year, Cedar Mountain School participates in the President's Education Award Program for educational excellence and effort, and also in the Chrysler Fund AAU Physical Education Award Program which afford children opportunities for special recognition for their achievements at the conclusion of the school year. An active School Community Association (S.C.A.) provided many opportunities for students and parents to participate in community service projects such as a winter coat exchange, food/clothing drives for the needy, a holiday gift collection for the needy, and a district-wide Senior Citizens' Prom. The School Community Association also sponsored a holiday gift store for students and participated in the many school-sponsored activities such as book fairs, the Pizza Hut Book-It Reading Program, Starlab Planetarium programs, the New Jersey Cake Celebrations, grade-level field days, and school pictures. The S.C.A. also conducted two major fund-raisers to provide the school with monies for field trips, enhancement materials and programs for the students throughout the school year. |
