The Vernon Township School District located in beautiful Northwestern, NJ is looking for a well-versed, student-driven, Director of Special Services to join the largest school district in Sussex County.  Candidates will analyze data, communicate well with all concerned parties, supervise programs Pre-K through 12, and manage classified students placed out of district.

Knowledge of the following is required:

Administrative code, all state and federal requirements for special education, regulations, policies, and current practices in Special Education

Child Study Team operations

Application of procedures for identification, referral, evaluation, classification, and placement in accordance with federal and state regulations and timelines

Supervision, recruitment, and development of all certified special education teaching staff, CST staff, supervisors, and non-certified special services staff

Autism Programs:  ABA Discrete Trial, Functional Behavior Assessments, and the roles of the BCBA and Behavior Tech

Related Services

Governance of out-of-district placements

Effective communication and involvement with SEPAG and BOE Special Services Committee with a focus on equity and student needs

Scheduling Special Education programs and placements in collaboration with principals, supervisors, and case managers

IEP oversight

Extended School Year Program

Curriculum and instruction development for students in special education including, but limited to, life skills and career-technical education

Programming for students who are Medically Fragile

Individual Health Plan oversight in collaboration with nursing staff

Oversight and coordination for all students in special education on  home instruction or in a medical setting

Crisis Intervention Programs

Contribute to transportation specifics for in-district and out-of-district

Minimum Qualifications”

NJ Principal Certification is required;

Previous experience as a School Psychologist, School Social Worker, LDTC, Teacher of the Handicapped or Teacher of Special Education is required

Master’s Degree in a field relevant to Special Education

Position is full-time, 12-months, tenure track, with a competitive salary and benefit package.

PART-TIME AIDES – Part-time aides are to work with special needs student(s) and to perform duties under the direct authority of the building principal with supervision by certified staff in the particular respective areas.  Role of the special needs aide could be as follows:  cafeteria/lunchroom assignments, transportation assignments, special classroom assignments, lifting/toileting assistance.  Position is available as long as student(s) are in need.  To be paid the hourly rate based on Step 1 of the aide’s guide ($16.17/hr.) paid semi-monthly; eff. immediately.
