The Vernon Township School District recognizes the need for an exceptionally strong language arts/literacy program to support, nurture, and encourage emergent and beginning readers. Students participate in a balanced literacy program. The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2) is used to assess students’ reading strengths and weaknesses. This data is used to drive instruction so that interventions may be designed for struggling students and enrichment opportunities may be created for our accelerated readers and writers.
Each K-4 building houses a reading specialist and instructional interventionist, each with unique and specialized knowledge used to support both teachers and students in creating print-rich environments conducive to literacy teaching and learning.
Students receive explicit phonics instruction to engage in word study and word work. All children K-4 are members of flexible, guided reading groups and are given support, structure, and autonomy through the Writing Fundamentals program, a highly coherent writing program fashioned in the vein of Writer’s Workshop. Read aloud and independent reading are valued and supported by the classroom teachers, media specialists, and the school libraries.
