Hello Cedar Mountain Families! There is a lot to share with you this month, enjoy reading about activities going on at “The Mountain”!

The Magic of Reading: We thank the SCA for bringing magician, Joe Romano, who presented a lively program called The Magic of Reading. Joe Romano shared many popular children’s books and demonstrated through magic how reading can take us to “magical places”. Students were in awe of this program!


Bagpipe Demonstration: Christopher McCann, VTHS Freshman, came to Cedar Mountain to play some songs on his bagpipe. Students were in awe of his talent. Christopher fielded many questions from very interested kindergarteners and first-graders. We thank Christopher for taking the time to play for us. Christopher is in the Marching Band at the high school. In addition to playing the bagpipe, he also plays the trumpet, cello, and the piano! Christopher told the Cedar Mountain students that one of his favorite teachers is Mr. Moschella, our music teacher! Thank you, Christopher!

Emotional Literacy: Through our school counseling program and our everyday teaching, students learn about how to be resilient and strong. This is a great user-friendly chart when you talk to your child at home about coping and all the ways children can cope. You can click on the image to read each letter of the alphabet.

Hallway Highlights- Here is a glimpse of some activities going on in our classrooms this month…

Youth Advisory Committee: Select first-grade students served on the Sodexo Youth Advisory Committee. Students were taken on a tour of the Cedar Mountain kitchen with Mrs. Remner, they learned about nutrition, and made their own pita pizzas. Next, Mrs. Remner had students taste-test foods to provide Sodexo with feedback on the foods that the Youth Advisory Committee would like to see introduced for lunch for all Cedar Mountain students. Next week, we look forward to nutrition lessons that will be taught by Sodexo Nutritionist, Marissa Thorsen.

Mrs. Wilson’s Classroom: Mrs. Wilson’s class loves literacy centers! Every day her students engage in centers like poetry, reading to a buddy, and the listening center. Students are learning about nature and the environment. In the poetry center, students are building a poem called “Look at Nature.” In the read with a buddy center, students enjoy reading National Geographic books about ocean creatures to stuffed animals. In the listening center, students are reading a Gail Gibbons book about Sea Turtles. 



Mrs. Megnin’s Classroom: Students are working on completing realistic fiction stories and are in various stages of the writing process. Students are learning how to develop creating characters, settings, problems, and solutions. Students put their writing ideas on a graphic organizer and created their thoughts into realistic fiction stories. As students complete their stories, they pair up to peer conference on each writing piece. Mrs. Megnin’s students enjoying listening to quiet music while they write.


Ms. Thomas’ Classroom: While students work in math centers, Ms. Thomas engages students in small group instruction. Students have begun exploration of numbers and number comparisons. Ms. Thomas is using a multi-sensory approach to satisfy the needs of the different learners in the classroom. 


Mrs. Gagliardi’s Classroom: For the last few weeks Mrs. Gagiliardi’s class has been working on writing their first book for Writing Workshop. The process began with learning what authors and illustrators do. Next, the students generated ideas for their book and then choose an idea to write a book about. Students wrote two pages about something they “liked.”  Later, students designed a cover for their book. Students published and shared their books with the class and then Mrs. Gagliardi’s class celebrated with a big publishing party with Mrs. Arlington’s and Ms. Stefkovich’s classes to celebrate all their hard work!



Spring Field Trip: We will be going to Vernon High School to see a preview of the musical “9 to 5” on Wednesday, March 20. There is no charge for your child to attend this program. Thank you for returning your signed permission slip to your child’s teacher.

Gertrude Hawk SCA Fundraiser: Thank you for your generosity in supporting our spring fundraiser. Money raised goes directly back to supporting student programs in the building. Orders are due back on Monday, March 25th. 




Family Math Night: You are invited to attending Cedar Mountain’s Math Night on Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 pm. There will be a parent training session when you arrive, after the parent training, parents will join their child in a classroom who will be playing various take-home math games. Kindergarten Registration: Our Kindergarten Registration for the 2019-2020 is open!  If you happen to have friends or neighbors with young children, please direct them to the main page of the VTSD website. Families will need to register online and then come in person to complete the registration process. When arriving at registration, you will need to bring a proof of residency and your child’s medical history (vaccinations and recent physical). Kindergarten registration will take place at Cedar Mountain Primary School on the following days/times:

Monday, April 1, from 4:30-8:00 pm;

Tuesday, April 2, from 9:30-11:30 am;

Wednesday, April 3, from 4:30-8:00 pm;

Thursday, March 29 from 9:30-11:30 am

Welcome to the Class of 2032!!

SCA Meeting: Monday, April 1, 2019, at 9:45. At April’s meeting, we will introduce our One School One Book initiative where we will read We’re All Wonders as a school! This is a meeting NOT to miss! This activity will be a school and family-based activity.
