District E-Mail Alert List 2009-2010 School Calendar 2009-2010 Student Handbook 2010-2011 Kindergarten Registration Walnut Ridge is one of three primary schools in the Vernon Township Public School District. It houses kindergarten and first grade as well as special education classes. Programs have been developed which address the specific educational needs of our diverse student population. Since the foundation of all future learning is established at the primary level, the curriculum emphasizes the acquisition of basic skills through an integrated language arts approach in conjunction with related enrichment activities. The purpose of this approach is to encourage children to recognize the meaningful relationship between the acquisition of knowledge and how it is applied to daily life experiences. During the primary school years, children are expected to develop necessary life skills such as accepting responsibility, working as a team member, practicing healthy living habits and acquiring a respect for oneself and others. Our fundamental goal is to motivate, inspire and enlighten children who are beginning their educational journey. Students take part daily in a walk/run fitness program and are challenged by a comprehensive curriculum. Special areas, such as music, library, art and physical education are also an integral part of the weekly routine for first grade children. All students are also provided computer instruction and the use of a fully-equipped computer laboratory. Walnut Ridge has a very involved and active parent group that assists in fund raising, provides assistance in classrooms and enrichment activities and programs for students. The students' efforts extend beyond the classroom as they participate in a jump-a-thon for the American Heart Association, several local and county-wide food drives, and other such drives for good causes.
