May 2018

“When all the world appears to be in a tumult…the seasons retain their rhythm.

Yes, fall gives us a premonition of winter, but then, winter, will be forced to relent, once again,

to the new beginnings of soft greens, longer light, and the sweet air of spring.”

~Madeleine M. Kunin

Welcome to May! It’s hard to believe that the 2017-2018 school year is coming to an end in only a few short weeks.

Let’s begin by celebrating some of the wonderful things happening at Vernon Township High School:

Congratulations to Ms. Lindsay LeDuc and her PEER Leaders who collected 880 lbs. of items for Champions for Charity! Thanks to everyone who donated food and items to this life-changing  program.

Congratulations to Maya Rakoczy was honored last week at the 41st Annual Superintendents’ Roundtable. We are very proud of this gifted student!

Mr. Jim LaBar has shared that Alonnah Evelyn has been awarded First Place and Matt VanVliet has been awarded Third Place for the Project Sussex “I Love America” poster contest! I would also like to thank Jim for having his students participate in this contest.

Thanks to the generosity of State Farm Insurance, our Juniors and Seniors enjoyed a program presented by Mr. Bobby Petrocelli titled ” 10 Seconds can Change your Life Forever.” We are very thankful to Ms. Jennifer Young for contacting our district and providing our students with Mr. Petrocelli’s life-changing message.

Eighteen Vernon DECA members traveled to Atlanta, GA April 20-25 for the International Career Development Conference.  Students participated in competitions related to the fields of Marketing, Business Management & Administration, Hospitality & Tourism and Finance.  Students also participated in an intensive leadership workshop.  DJ McQuillan was awarded a Finalist Medallion for his performance in the Professional Selling Event.

Thank you to everyone that came out to support the VTHS Theatre Arts Scholarship fund at our Coffee and Comedy Night at The Daily Bean! The group will be holding a Character Car Wash on Sunday, May 20th at the McAfee Firehouse…more details to follow. Please mark your calendars!

A testing update…

PAARC Testing is now complete–with the exception of students who need to make up some tests; students will be notified about their make-up sessions. The students did an excellent job throughout the six-day process and we appreciate your cooperation in getting your son/daughter to school on time for the testing sessions.

AP Testing will be held at Vernon Township High School from Monday, May 8th through Friday, May 18th. Please note that not every student will be testing every day. If you would like further information, the 2018 AP Exam Schedule can be found at https://www.princetonreview.com/college/ap-exam-schedule.

The NJ Student Learning Assessment – Science (NJSLA-S) for 11th graders is scheduled  for Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd this year.

*These standardized testing sessions will not change the schedule for VTHS. We will operate on a regular, full-day schedule on each testing day, altering the daily schedule as necessary.

We are in the process of developing a schedule for our Finals and are making every effort to accommodate the students who need to complete all of their exams prior to the Graduation Ceremony on June 22nd. I will notify everyone as soon as the schedule is finalized in the next few weeks.

Some reminders:

If your child was absent on Thursday, April 26, 2018, for “Take Your Child to Work Day,” please be sure that he/she submits a signed document verifying participation. We need that documentation in order to render an “excused” absence for the day.

The SCA is busily preparing for a Teacher/Staff Appreciation Brunch with a “Tea Party” theme. Please help them make this event a special one; please visit https://etherpad.net/p/Teachers_Appreciation_Brunch to make a donation or contact vths.sca@gmail.com for further information.

The VTHS Junior Prom will be held on Saturday, May 19th from 6:30-10:30 pm. The prom will be held at the high school this year. Tickets will be $45.oo per attendee and go on sale next week in the cafeteria during lunches.

The parents/guardians of our Senior Class are hard at work creating an amazing Senior Breakfast for our soon-to-be graduates! Please visit https://etherpad.net/p/2018_senior_breakfast  and help make this event a memorable one for our seniors!

The VTHS Class of 2018 presents “Una Bella Fine.” This year’s senior prom will be held at Perona Farms in Andover, NJ on May 31st.

As we move closer to Prom season, please take a moment to review the flyer from Project Self-Sufficiency announcing their FREE “Sister-to-Sister” Prom Shop. A copy of the flyer is available in the VTHS Digital Backpack.

The Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2018 is scheduled for Friday, June 22nd and will begin at 6:30 pm. Diplomas will be distributed on the last day of school, which is currently scheduled for Thursday, June 28th. Attendance records must be accurate up to and including the final day of school, so attendance will be taken each day through June 28th.

Vernon Township High School has registered to participate in #MyVoiceMyVoteNJ. The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, and the NJ Social Studies Supervisors Association are proud to team up to organize this voter registration drive. They believe it is important to honor our students’ voices, to let them know that they know what they are saying. From April 30th through May 11th, there will be reminders shared with students about this voter registration campaign. Students who are 17 years old can register now, but will only be allowed to vote once they turn 18. This campaign serves to promote a positive course of action and civic engagement for students that will indeed make a difference for the future of America.

Our Spring Sports are well underway, but our athletes and coaches would appreciate more cheering fans!  Please be sure to look up the Athletic Schedule on the VTSD website and enjoy some of the longer days appreciating the hard work put forth by our athletic department.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming musical performances:

Friday, May 4th – Spring Band Concert – 7:30 pm

Friday, May 11th – String Symposium Concert – 7:30 pm

Friday, May 18th – Spring Choral Concert – 7:30 pm
