Join us for the April 26, 7:00 pm, public Board of Education meeting, held at Lounsberry  Hollow, where our district will publicly congratulate and honor all district NJ Governor’s Teachers of the Year, NJ Governor’s Educational Support Professionals of the Year, and Mrs. Nicole Keane, our NJ State School Counselor of the Year. Cedar Mountain’s Teacher of the Year is Ms. MaryRose Cummins and our Educational Services Professional is Mrs. Janet DeSenzo, Technology Coach.

First-Grade Poetry: As part of our poetry unit, students will be learning how to read and recite poetry. On April 27th, we will be holding a first-grade poetry reading. Your child will be coming home with a poem to practice reading. Your child is not required to memorize the poem, only learn how to read the poem. Thank you for supporting this academic activity. I have attended many classrooms to hear students read their class poems; I have been extremely impressed by hearing students read with meaning and expression! During our morning announcements, various students from all first-grade classes are reading a variety of poems on the public address system. Our school is enjoying listening to our readers.

Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration: This month, in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, students are reading The Lorax with Mr. Joseph, our Media Specialist. Students will be receiving a sapling on Friday, April 27th. Here is a video link to information on Earth Day and Arbor Day as well as how to plant a sapling. Our school will also be planting extra saplings on our school grounds. As a reminder, Mr. Joseph will be holding a one-day Scholastic Buy One Get One Free Book Fair on Friday, May 4th, in the library, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

Free Literacy Night: On Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, 6:00-7:30 pm, Project Self-Sufficiency will be sponsoring a FREE Family Literacy Night. Come for a campfire dinner, read with your child during story time, and have fun crafting. Here is a link to the sign-up form. 

Fun Day: First-Grade: Tuesday, May 15 (rain date May 17) and Kindergarten: Wednesday, May 16 (rain date May 18). We are in need of the following items:

15 Jumbo Chalks,

30 bottles of Joy Dish Soap,

47 Gallons of Water (for students to drink),

10 Pool Noodles,

50 Jumbo Car sponges

We are looking for parent volunteers; please call the main office at 973-764-2890, if you are available to assist- we love our parent volunteers. If volunteering, you will assist with the opposite grade of your child so you can come to see you child participate.

School Spirit Day: Thursday, May 17: Our School is Groovy, wear tie-dye OR school colors!

The Sussex County Miners are sponsoring a reading incentive program for students! Some classes in Cedar Mountain are participating in the Miners Reading Incentive. Students that participate in the reading program can earn one free meal voucher to Friendly’s and two free tickets to the Miner’s Game on June 16, 2018. Please speak to your child’s teacher for additional information.

2018-2019 SCA Nomination for Officers: It is time to make a nomination for officers of the 18-19 Cedar Mountain SCA. Please click this link to access the nomination form. We encourage all of you to consider running for an officer position or volunteering in any way that you can. This form can be used for any of the schools in our district.

May SCA meeting will take place on Monday, May 7, at 9:30 am. We will have a very informative presentation by Rebecca Dorney from the Vernon Coalition. We will also be holding an election of the 2018-2019 officers. Here is a listing of upcoming SCA events:

 Field Trips: Our first-grade field trip to Space Farms will take place on Wednesday, May 30 (rain date May 31). Our kindergarten field trip to Down on the Farm at the Sussex County Fairgrounds will take place on June 6, 7, or 8, depending on your child’s classroom. Please look for permission slips and other information to follow.
