During our Spirit Week students showed their holiday creativity…
We enjoyed listening to the VTHS Meistersingers and Brass Choir on Monday, December 17th, students sang along with very popular music.
Students got into “character” as they dressed up as their favorite holiday show or book. There were lots of Cindy Lou Whos in the building!
Crazy socks and sweaters lit up the hallway as everyone got on their “sillies”!
…and who could resist pajama day when many classes went to The North Pole…
Thank you to the Glen Meadow Middle School Ambassadors who came to read to our students!
Thank you to the Glen Meadow Middle School Band, Choir, and Orchestra under the direction of Mrs. Young, Mr. Kelter, and Mrs. Berls! We walked to Glen Meadow on a sunny morning to hear the talents of so many middle schoolers. I was very fortunate to be the narrator for “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. You can see from the looks on students’ faces, that they had lots of fun singing and clapping along!
Here is some information on upcoming events
During the weeks of January 7 and January 14, kindergarten students will be administered the Baseline Assessment System (BAS) and will begin working in guided reading groups shortly after the assessment is completed. Guided reading is an instructional method where students work in small groups as they read texts at their instructional reading level that review or enhance the skills and strategies taught during Reading Workshop. First-grade teachers will be giving students a running record in their classroom.
As we settle into the winter months and your children will be indoors more, consider having your child access Miss Winzer’s Media Center website to practice his or her literacy and math skills online. Here is the link to Miss Winzer’s site.
Our next SCA meeting will take place on Monday, January 7, at 9:45 am. At January’s meeting, Mr. Brendan Maurice, School Counselor, will go over his school counseling program and our district’s updated HIB policy. Here are our upcoming SCA activities; fliers will be sent home in the new year:
Friday, January 11: Movie Night– 5:30 pm (snow date January 18)
Friday, January 25: Family Game Night 6:30 pm (snow date February 1)
School Closed: on Monday, January 15, 2018, in observance of Martin Luther King Day
40 Developmental Assets: We are very fortunate to have the national program 40 Developmental Assets brought to us by Rebecca Dorney from The Center for Prevention and Counseling on Friday, January 18, at 9:45 am. You may also know Rebecca from the Vernon Coalition, too! 40 Developmental Assets is training for adults/parents that teach participants about the 40 positive supports and strengths that young people need to succeed. Half of the assets focus on the relationships and opportunities they need in their families, schools, and communities (external assets). The remaining assets focus on the social-emotional strengths, values, and commitments that are nurtured within young people (internal assets). 40 Developmental Assets is a research-based program that comes from Search Institute. Here is the flyer for this program. Here is the link to Search Institute. We will be holding follow up meetings on Friday, February 15 and Friday, March 15, at 9:45 am. A light breakfast will be served- all are welcome!
Outdoor Recess: As a reminder, our students will go outside for recess as long as the temperature stays about 25 degrees. Please make sure your child wears a warm coat, hat, and gloves daily in preparation for playing outside. We try as often as possible in the winter months to have our students go outside for physical activity.
I look forward to seeing your children grow and learn as we move into the middle of our school year! Best wishes for a wonderful holiday and happy, healthy 2019!
