Good Afternoon Walnut Ridge Families and Happy April!

As we head into the last quarter of the year please take note of these few announcements:

I > THANK YOU

First things first. Before we get into some of these announcements I want to take a moment to thank you all for a very successful Parent Teacher Conference and Scholastic Book Fair Week! It was so wonderful to see so many of you meeting with the teachers and purchasing books for your children! Not only is it a great thing to have books in the house (Did you know that the SAT scores of HS junior and seniors shares a direct correlation with how many books they had in their homes prior to age 6? IT IS TRUE!) but it also served as a terrific fundraiser for our school!

II > DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Now that we are in the month of April, and it is spring, the cold weather is over right? Not so fast! This morning, as an example, it was below freezing at WR. I bring this up just a friendly parent-to-parent reminder to dress your child(ren) in layers. We will try to get out on the playground as much as we can and so it is important that the students are dressed for the weather.

III > UPCOMING TRIP TO THE FARM

A reminder of our upcoming trip to the farm on April 9! We will be visiting our farmer friends, the Mcleans at the farm at Glenwood Mountain. CLICK HERE to visit their website. The students are already excited to hold the baby chicks, see the pigs, learn how honey is made, and plant vegetables and flowers! The Mcleans will be visiting our students the day before (April 8th) to prepare them with information about life on the farm so that they will be able to understand even more during their visit.

IV > LIBRARY DURING THE 4TH MARKING PERIOD

Our 4th Marking Period Special with Ms. Demsak is Library! Over the last several weeks of school, your child(ren) will be coming home on Tuesdays with library books! Please read with your child and ask him/her about what the class learned today in Library!

V > CHANGE OF DATE: FATHERS’ DAY EVENT

Please note on your calendars that we have changed the date for the Fathers’ Day event at WR to June 12th. Please stay tuned for more information! Thanks!

VI > CAR SEAT INFORMATION EVENT: APRIL 16

Please save the date for Tuesday, April 16. In between the AM and PM preschool sessions the VTEA’s PRIDE committee will be partnering with our school, the Vernon Police Department and Atlantic Health to provide any and all parents, grandparents, and caregivers updates on the latest car seat laws and to share information on new products that have come out over the past few years. This is definitely something you will not want to miss. It will run from 12:10 – 12:55 pm. Please RSVP to jdicarlo@vtsd.com if you are planning to attend.

VII > LOOKING AHEAD TO CEDAR MOUNTAIN

Several parents have asked whether we will be taking the WR students who are moving up to Kindergarten next year over to Cedar Mountain to meet their teachers and see the school as we did last year. The answer is: YES. The date is scheduled for May 29th and we will provide you with more details as the date approaches.

Also, in the coming days parents of students moving to CM next year will receive an SCA ballot. This is so that you have the opportunity to vote on the SCA representatives for next year. This will be arriving in your child’s folder.

Last message about CM: This week is Kindergarten registration. For more information on the dates/times/requirements – CLICK HERE!

VIII > HONORING OUR MS. COOK AND MS. GALLANT

At the Wednesday April 17th Board meeting the BOE and District will honor all the NJ Governor’s Teachers of the Year and NJ Governor’s Educational Support Professionals of the Year. If you are available and able to attend to support Ms. Dana Cook and Ms. Jen Gallant (our WR winners) please plan to come to Lounsberry at 7 pm!

Sincerely,

Mr. Joseph S. Piccirillo, Principal
