Good Morning Walnut Ridge Family!

Hard to believe that today is June 19th and we are coming to the end of the school year. It has been an absolute honor to serve as the Principal of Walnut Ridge this year and true privilege to get to know you and your children. I am so proud of the work we have done together this year, alongside our talent teachers, caring aides, and dedicated support staff. For those of you who have a child or children moving on from Walnut Ridge and heading to Cedar Mountain, I wish you all the best. Ms. Gebhardt and the team at Cedar Mountain are tremendous and you will definitely enjoy your time there. For those of you who have children staying with us next year…WOOHOO! I am so thrilled to have your child(ren) for another year!

Just a few announcements for the end of the year:

1) 60th Anniversary/Moving Up Ceremony:

Nothing can be said to fully describe how wonderful Friday night’s event was. I am so thankful to you the parents and community members for coming out in such numbers to support the students. There were over 700 people in attendance!! It really was an unforgettable night and I know that the students had a blast and were so proud of their accomplishments! Not only was it nice to celebrate our children that are moving up, but it was great to share the night with so many retired teachers, board members, and former students of Walnut Ridge that came back to celebrate Walnut Ridge’s 60th anniversary. The first graduating class of WR graduated on June 14, 1958.

2) Father’s Day:

Although the Moving Up Ceremony/60th Anniversary got most of the attention last week, I don’t want to miss an opportunity to shout-out all the dads and father figures that came to celebrate Father’s Day at our event on Wednesday, June 13. It was fun for me to participate in the event as a dad as well as a principal, while we all painted birdhouses with our children! It was obvious to me that we have many, many, many, very wonderful fathers in our community and I am glad that we were able to have such a successful event in your honor.

3) Today’s Events:

Today, many of our children will be going with their teachers to visit Cedar Mountain, so as to prepare them for next year. They have really been looking forward to it, and we know they will have a great time. Additionally, Walnut Ridge will be visited by the VTHS Class of 2018 in their caps and gowns today as they walk through WR’s Canyon of Heroes. Congratulations to the Class of 2018. On behalf of Walnut Ridge, we wish you the best of luck in your future. Make Vernon proud!!!

4) Early Dismissal Days:

As you know, and just as a reminder…Walnut Ridge will be having early dismissal days beginning this Thursday and continuing until the end of our school year. This includes: 6/21, 6/22, 6/25, 6/26, 6/27. Also, as a reminder — here is how the schedule changes on these days for students.

AM students: 9:30am – 11:30am

PM students: 11:30am – 1:30pm

5) Last Day of School:

Wednesday, June 27 is Walnut Ridge’s last day of school for the 2017-2018 school year.

6) Extended School Year:

If your child is joining us for Extended School Year (ESY), that program begins Monday, July 2. No children will be in the building at Walnut Ridge on Thursday, June 28 or Friday, June 29.

7) Have a Wonderful Summer:

Summer is a great time to be together with family, take some “field trips” with your children, and enjoy the outdoors! September does come quickly though and many of you will be looking for ways to prepare your children for getting back into the swing of thingsonce school starts again.
