Dear Parents and Guardians:

We will be holding two Open Houses this month on Thursday, July 18 and Thursday, July 25. I invite you to bring your child to Glen Meadow to say hello to Dr. Kosek and me. Please access my Sign Up Genius page to select an Open House that works for your family. We look forward to spending some time with your child.

Reminder to our entering 6th grade parents… As per mandatory requirements set forth by the State of New Jersey, all children entering the 6th grade will need the following immunizations for admittance to school for the 2019-2020 school year:

  • Tdap booster
  • Meningococcal vaccine

In order for Ms. Ash, our school nurse, to receive your child’s updated immunization schedule, please consider the following:

  • Hand deliver to the main office during July or August
  • Have your child deliver to the nurse’s office in September
  • Send via email to our school nurse at sash@vtsd.com
  • Send via fax to our school nurse at 973-764-0851 or 973-764-3295.

A copy of your child’s most up to date annual physical and/or sports physical is also encouraged.

If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Ash at sash@vtsd.com.

Don’t forget about our Summer of “Freadom” where your child is encouraged to read books, magazines, etc. that interest your child. Here is the link to the letter that explains this summer’s reading program. The Sussex County Library also has a reading program this summer called A Universe of Stories. Check it out! Here is a link to Barnes and Noble’s Teen page, filled with a plethora of books recommended for young adult readers.

Did you know that NJ is the only state in the nation that has to “buy” its blood? NJ’s blood supply is very low…Our Glen Meadow Middle School, under the direction of Mrs. Janice Schmidt, will be hosting a NY and NJ Blood Center Blood Drive on Thursday, July 25, 2019, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in Cafeteria B. Please consider stopping by to donate a pint of blood.

On August 9th please join us for Reading Sit and Chat and Get Together at 11:00 am, to talk about all of your summer reading. Miss Yost our Library/Media Specialist, will be joining us to share the books that she’s been reading this summer as well. Come hang out with your friends and join us! Here is the link to the GMMS Book Talk Flyer below. Please complete the Google survey that is linked in the flier if you are attending. I am reading two historical fiction books that I will be discussing with our students. I’m reading The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe, and Threads and Flames by Esther M. Friesner. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been reading, too!

The Genesis Portal will be open the week of August 19th where you will see your child’s schedule and busing information. You and your child are welcome to come to school and “walk through” your schedule.

Family Back to School Night

While it is still mid-July, I want all Glen Meadow families to know about our September Family Back-to-School Night that will be taking place on Tuesday, September 3, at 5:00 pm. All students are requested to attend this event with parents and guardians. All students will first stop in the gym to receive a grade-level specific graduation “Class of” t-shirt prior to reporting to homeroom. All students will be requested to wear this t-shirt on the first day of school on Wednesday, September 4. Students will be encouraged to wear this t-shirt or other Vernon apparel on various school spirit days that will typically be the third Thursday of every month. Check out the Glen Meadow calendar for these dates and many other events going on throughout the school year. You will be receiving a letter in the mail about our Family Back-to-School Night…mark your calendar and please save the date for this important school event!

Is your child looking for Service Learning hours? Many of our students through the organization they belong are always looking for ways to serve the community because they have a requirement to accrue hours of service. Maybe some of our entering 7th and 8th grade students are considering applying to be a member of our National Junior Honor Society and will need hours of serving others as one of the requirements to qualify for this prestigious designation. Please encourage your child to call me for projects I have available for groups of students right here at Glen Meadow Middle School; I would happy to provide our students with opportunities right in our own school community! Our first service project will be to spruce up the garden in the front of the building. We will be working on the garden project on Wednesday, July 24, beginning at 1:00 pm. Come for an hour or two! Please bring garden gloves, wear a hat and sunscreen, too.

Sincerely,

Rosemary Gebhardt
