After a conference call this weekend with officials from the Sussex County Department of Education, the Sussex County Department of Health, the NJ Department of Education, and Sussex County school district superintendents, we are announcing that the Vernon Township School District will be closed from Monday March 16 through Friday March 27.
On Monday, March 16, students will begin on-line, virtual instruction with district issued Chromebooks, (where applicable) using the Schoology platform. For Special Needs Students:
- Students will utilize the Schoology platform, along with MobyMax (2-8) and SumDog (K-3).
- Parents should email teachers & Child Study Team members (case manager) with any online learning concerns.
- Teachers and CST will have ongoing communication regarding individual students’ needs.
- The New Jersey Office of Special Education Programs – (OSEP) has yet to offer guidance to school districts as to how to handle IEP meetings during this school closure. Until we receive guidance, we will not be conducting on-site IEP meetings. All IEP Team members (including parents) need to be present and participating in order to develop a meaningful Individualized Education Plan for students. IEP meetings will be scheduled in a timely fashion and to the best of our ability once school resumes. If any new information is received from OSEP, we will update parents immediately.
For any students who need assistance regarding the resetting of passwords or any accessibility issues please go to www.vtsd.com/tech. Also, for students (grades 2-12) who did not get their chromebook yesterday, we will be opening the High School today and Monday from 1-3pm so families can pick up a device. We will have a limited number of additional charging cables as well – we have a large order in for additional chargers that will come in by Wednesday.
The Board of Education will host the regular public March meeting of the Board on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Walnut Ridge Elementary School Library. This meeting, like all other public Board meetings will be live streamed on our district website at www.vtsd.com.
There is an open public forum on the school budget scheduled for Monday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. This will still occur but will take place at the Walnut Ridge Elementary School Library. It will be live streamed on our website and we will accept questions from the chat room.
As a reminder, students receiving free or reduced lunch may pick up a bagged breakfast/lunch each day between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the VTHS main entrance.
During this trying time for our community, state, and nation, thank you for your flexibility and patience.
